MayDay 2001

Apr 30, 2005

A statement from a Londoner to the events in Oxford Circus.

Today I have been trapped with a thousand or so people for eight hours. We were refused food and drink and not given access to toilets. With not even enough space for more than a few to sit at one time.

Who were these people? Young and old, at least one woman pregnant, people with kids at school or child minders, regular people but all, well all that I spoke to, with one overriding cause.

A cause that is difficult to put in one word but it encompasses - Third World Slavery and debt, Global Warming, Globalisation and the disparity between rich and poor. The aims that Tony Blair calls ‘spurious’.

I feel really sad. Standing in Oxford Circus, surrounded by visors and shields, not a weapon amongst us, unless you count the gun squirting bubbles into the air, I thought, is this what Britain has come to? It felt more like China or Indonesia.

I also feel really angry. Of course the press won’t report it properly, it’s not in their interests. But to me it shows the depths our government is prepared to trawl to suppress and stifle rather than address our issues.

These issues won’t go away. Long term you can’t treat them as though they were an inner city housing estate. I went to the protests today because of a belief and an ideology and have come away full of bitterness and resentment. And Mr. Blair, whether you like it or not, people are starting to take notice.
