Global Day of Action 2005

Dec 03, 2005

Around 10,000 people took to the streets of London on Saturday (Dec 3rd) as part of the International Day of Climate Protest. Demonstrations were held all around the world from Montreal to Bangladesh.

Destabilisation of the climate represents an immense threat to humanity and our life on the planet. The Greenhouse gases that cause climate change have a delayed effect. This means that we do not know how much irreversible damage we have done already - but we know that if we don’t act now the effects will be many times more devastating. We risk passing tipping points that produce massive destabilising changes. The damage has been done mainly by the rich nations but the poorest will suffer worst and most immediately …though everyone is threatened eventually. People are dying from climate change now through an unrelenting increase in the frequency and severity of ‘natural’ disasters.
The Campaign against Climate Change exists to mobilise grass roots pressure for effective action to prevent catastrophic climate destabilisation. The Campaign is growing rapidly. We are organising the London demonstration for December 3rd, the Saturday half way through the Montreal talks on Kyoto. The focus is on an international treaty for setting and enforcing effective caps on the totality of global emissions. The Kyoto Protocol must represent the first step towards larger emission reductions. The Campaign focuses on those most responsible. The USA and George Bush’s refusal to adopt Kyoto is the biggest global barrier to effective action. However, the Campaign reacts to events and organised demonstrations in response to Blair’s recent verbal backtracking on a post Kyoto treaty. The midpoint of the talks will give us the chance to hold leaders to account for their actions in the talks up to that point.Demonsrations were held in many countries around the world including , Montreal, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Istanbul, Athens, across Italy, Berlin, Romania, Edinburgh,Dublin South Korea and many others.
