What Globalise Resistance Stands For

Anti-Capitalism

We are an avowed anti-capitalist organisation. We encourage activism, we consist of people from differing ideologies, and of people who do not adhere to one ideology or another. We recognise there are differences between the idea of activists, but we proudly occupy the common ground there is between us. We encourage debate between parts of our organisation and parts of the movement, but debate in a constructive and respectful manner. There is more that unites us than divides us.

We oppose the International Financial Institutions that have always acted in the interests of big businesses and western governments. The fact that medicines are priced out of the reach of millions of people is a damning indictment on the way todays world is run in the interests of multinational corporations.

We are proud to oppose the ‘War on Terror’ which has been little more than a massacre to protect and promote the interests of the same corporations and governments. We support real democracy, people’s struggles and progressive grassroots organisation. We encourage you to join us in political activity in accordance with these themes.

International Solidarity

As our name suggests we keep a keen eye on international development and organise for solidarity between the UK movement and those overseas. Globalise Resistance first came to prominence in mobilising for international protests against the G8, WTO, EU and participation in events such as the World and European Social Forums. We have sought to raise awareness of struggles in the Global South.

A 2 B Marches or Direct Action?

Duh! Both! Some direct action (check the student protests before Xmas 2010, or some of the actions in Cairo of late) stems from A 2 B marches. Direct action is a vital part of the activists tool kit, but many people are not at a stage in their lives or have the confidence to get involved in actions that may risk arrest. We strive to provide a platform for everyone who wants to get involved. We need to use every resource at our disposal to effect change and we refuse to attack the activism of others, we’d rather engage with it.

Who’s behind GR? How does it work?

The people currently working with GR are independent and free of any political affiliation. We welcome anyone, regardless of affiliation to get involved and help us to make the movement stronger. There are as yet no formal structures in GR, we plan to hold regular forums to debate a political theme, and then to get down to organising resistance – maybe plugging into something some other group is organising, maybe taking the initiative to organise action ourselves – it’s entirely down to people at the forum.
