
Social Forums
In January 2001, 12,000 activists gathered in Porto Alegre in the south of Brazil to discuss the issues they faced. It was a huge success. For two further years, Porto Alegre hosted the WSF, then it moved to Mumbai in 2004. In 2005 it was held simultaneously in Bamako, Mali and Caracas, Venezuela. In 2007 it will be held in Nairobi, Kenya. GR will again have a delegation there. The World Social Forum is financially prohibitive to many, and there are scores of issues specific to different regions of the world. The ESF has been held in Florence, Paris, London and Athens. there is not a future venue yet decided, but we hope this event, which has spurned actions such as the amazing international day of action against the war on Iraq in Feb. 2003 continues... watch this space
The European Social Forum has now closed in Istanbul, smaller than previously, but recognising that the current crisis is experiencing a growing resistance. Here is the Call of the Social Movements agreed at Istanbul

Back in 2003 George Bush's visit to London brought hundreds of thousands of people onto the streets. He stayed at Buckingham Palace under siege and the world was certain that although he was feted by the government and the royal family, normal people in the UK did not welcome him. The largest mobilisation during his stay was indeed the biggest EVER protest in London on a weekday; 300,000 people turned out to register their disgust.
We are constantly being told that easy personal actions will 'save the climate'. The problem is that most of these “top ten tips” are ineffectual and play directly to our denial tendencies.
Hardly a week passes without someone emailing, phoning or posting a DVD to the Globalise Resistance office championing the idea of 9/11 being an inside job.
