G8
MEET TO PLAN PROFIT

On 1 June , George Bush is flying into Old Europe to discuss postwar strategies
for the Great Powers with seven other self appointed leaders of the world.
Far from weakening the movement, the experience of the war has given it
further depth and more activists. This will be its first major mobilisation
after the fall of Baghdad. It is an ideal opportunity to show the world
leaders the movement hasnt gone away, to make sure the movement
against war links with the global justice movement as the military bombardment
transforms into the corporate takeover of Iraq.
Publicly, the agenda of the G8 summit is set to tackle the issues of water
supply and African development. It is inconceivable that the G8 will not
contain discussions on the war on Iraq and the US empire building project
which is inflicting so much suffering on the world. The G8 is one of the
most convenient forums for the richest countries to divide the sp(oil)s
of the war and to plot the next stage in the exploitation of other countries
resources.
Over the past six months, activists from across Europe have gathered to
plan a whole series of actions against the G8. They will take place over
a week and will feature blockades, mass demonstrations, protest bonfires,
debates, forums, exhibitions and camps.
EVIAN
G8 PROTESTS AND EVENTS
Evian is a bit of a misnomer for the actual protests, as the entire town
will effectively be a red zone (residents only allowed into Evian). The
two main centres of action will be in Geneva and Annemasse, a town just
inside France a few kilometres from Geneva. Many of the delegates to the
G8 summit will stay in Geneva, there will be an effective red zone in
the city, and there are plans to blockade roads and routes to Evian during
the summit. A more comprehensive timetable is below.
There will be scores of different events and initiatives. On arrival in
Geneva or Annemasse, there will be programmes available to give you the
full picture. The main events are:
Thursday 29 May
Several alternative villages will settle: in Annemasse, near the airport,
the village against capitalism, authoritarianism and war and
the intergalactic village. A summit for another world
will open in Annemasse, in the Martin Luther King room, initiated
by the CRID (a french NGO) with the support of numerous others French
NGOs and groups.
Friday
30 May
The ATTAC groups of Europe will meet in Geneva, further to the World meeting
of ATTAC in Paris, at the G-World summit;
Saturday 31 May
During the day there will be four counter-summits in Geneva: against debt,
the WTO, pension privatisation, and war and the occupation of Iraq. These
summits will be followed by a mass assembly of the social movements in
the evening. Meanwhile fires will be started all along Lake Geneva as
a signal of emergency in the area.
Sunday 1 June
Two mass demonstrationsone starting in Geneva, one in Annemassewill
converge near the border, creating a gathering organisers hope will be
big enough to blockade the whole area.
GETTING THERE
Local groups of Globalise Resistance are planning coaches to take people
across to Annemasse. There are flights
which were (at the time of writing) quite affordable from Luton or Gatwick
(50 if youre flexible with the times of your flights). Trains
are a possibilitycheck the French national rail website at www.sncf.com
(they have an English section).
ACCOMMODATION
The bulk of the activists accommodation is going to be at Annemasse,
at two global village campsites. As far as we know there will
be a EUR10 charge for staying (no matter how many nights you stay for).
The camps will be at the aerodrome just east of the centre of town. Hostels
and cheap hotel rooms in Geneva and Annemasse are available, but will
be getting booked heavily as we write.
CONVERGENCE
In Annemasse, a convergence centre will be built at the town airport close
to the alternative villages; the press centre and the administrative centre
will be held in the Martin Luther King room, near the station. In Geneva
the maison des associations will hold the administrative centre
and the press centre. The address will be announced shortly.
